Carbon Nanomaterials Surface Coating

The invention is directed to the use of electrochemical deposition to coat the surface of nanostructured materials for property improvement and multi-functionalization. The process in accordance with a preferred embodiment produces deposition of various materials on a large quantity of carbon nanomaterials simultaneously under a controlled fashion.

Fabrication of metallic layer coated carbon nanostructures in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention greatly improves the thermal/electric conductivity. Coating of magnetic materials provides tunable magnetic responses.

Preferably, a practical, low cost and non-contact approach using external small magnetic field to control the rotation, distribution and alignment of the magnetized carbon nanostructure have been invented. The process is suitable to produce coated carbon nanostructures for lightweight and high strength composites, electromagnetic field shielding composites and sensor development.
